FIBER OPTICS AND PHOTOCHROMIC DYE

divyabandreddi

Prototype 3

Our third prototype was testing if we would be able to weave fiber optics into fabric in a way that would add to the design. We also wanted to test if using a UV light through our fiber optics would be strong enough to activate out photochromic pigment. We found that the ends of the fiber optics were strong enough to change the color of the pigment. After sanding the fiber optics we were able to get a stronger light source through out each strand. This however still was facing difficulty changing the pigment. We are looking into getting a more light sensitive pigment as well as trying more sanded strands of fiber optics to maximize the UV light coming through and the sensitivity of the pigment.

This video demonstrates how the ends of the fiber optics where able to initiate a color change in the photochromic pigment.
